Stop At: Kasbah du Pacha el Glaoui
The Telouet Kasbah, which belonged to the Pacha of the Atlas, the Glaoui, and stands in ruins after the last Pasha fled the country after the departure of the French armies. In the first kasbah, you will visit only a few rooms that can be seen, as much of the kasbah has been closed off because of the falling ceilings and unsafe walls. However, the tiled walls, fluted pillars, beautifully painted wooden ceilings and colored glass windows of the reception rooms allow you to imagine what it was like in its prime.
Duration: 30 minutes
Pass By: Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou
From here, head to the village of Ait-Ben-Haddou, located atop a hill in the Souss Massa Draa region, along the Ouarzazate River. It was once a major stop for traders carrying gold, salt, and slaves through the caravan route across the Sahara. Several Hollywood blockbusters were filmed here, including Game of Thrones, Indiana Jones, and The Gladiator. The lower part of the village was reconstructed, and in recent years, UNESCO carried out more restoration work. Break for lunch at a local restaurant in Ait-Ben-Haddou, where you can enjoy your meal against the panoramic backdrop of the kasbah. Make your way back to Marrakech via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, which takes you through some of the High Atlas’ most beautiful sites over nearly 200 kilometers.
Stop At: Tizi n Tichka
Our driver will meet you at your hotel or riad for an early departure for us to start our ascent of the High Atlas Mountains. This part of our journey, full of twists, turns, and hairpins, offers amazing scenery as we approach the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. It is the highest in the whole of Africa at 2260 m.
Duration: 10 minutes
Stop At: Taourirt Kasbah
From here, continue to Ouarzazate, which marks the beginning of the Sahara desert. Visit Taourirt Kasbah. This former Glaoui residence, situated on the edge of the town, on the road to the Morocco Sahara desert, is considered to be one of the most beautiful kasbahs of Morocco. It consists of a maze of luxury apartments, simple clay houses, and crenelated towers, which are lavishly decorated with geometric motifs. Part of the fortified village is open to the public. After some time at leisure for a cup of mint tea or coffee, drive back to Marrakech later in the afternoon while crossing the High Atlas Mountains.
