The English ruled over the Indian subcontinent for over 3 centuries. The story of their conquest of India started here, in Fort St George. Walking through the fort is a fascinating experience. Today it is the seat of the state's democratic institutions, a partial makeover from the time when it was the seat of power of the East India company. From its beginnings as a small garrison to the imposing half decagon it is today, the fort has seen many battles, stand offs and eventually the historic raising of the Indian flag of Independence too.
The fort is where some of English colonial history's most influential generals started their careers and their families. From Napoleon to Tipu Sultan, Fort St George has a long list of connections to some of world history's most recognizable names. Walk with us to understand life in the fort many centuries ago, the people who built the English empire and its transition into what it is today.
