These high mountain peaks offer some of the best views in all of Pisgah National Forest and are top destination for hikers and runners in the region. The Plott Balsams, Black Mountains, and even Mount Mitchell can be seen from their summits. Along the way, we'll offer a brief history lesson to how the area came to be and highlight local flora and fauna that we discover along the way.

Itinerary Details

Enjoy a 5ish mile trail run across bald mountaintops with 360-degree views and an experienced, local tour guide. We'll meet at the trailhead on Black Balsam Road off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, 45 minutes from Brevard, Waynesville, or Asheville. Our run will form a loop across heath balds defined by mountain laurel, rhododendron, wild blackberries, and an assortment of other wildflowers based on the time of year.

Running experience is highly recommended, though this loop is considered moderate in difficulty if you've run trails before. This tour can also be tackled as a hike, versus a run, based on your preference. Along the way, we'll highlight local flora, fauna, history, and answer any questions you may have during your visit to the area. Early morning starts include a cup of coffee and snacks, and afternoon/evening runs include packaged beer to take home with you.

Snacks, water, and other nutritional supplements are included. Headlights are recommended if you'd like to run around sunrise or sunset.
