Founded in 1690, Paarl is the Berg River Valley`s main centre, though the first man in the valley was Abraham Gabbema in 1657.Named after two huge granite domes which glistened in the morning sun known as Paarl Rock. In 1688 a number of Huguenots settled in the Paarl Valley becoming part of the cradle of the South African wine industry.
