The Monastery of Saint Anthony the Great (Mar Antonios al-Kabir) is situated at a height of 950 meters above sea level in the celebrated Valley of Qozhaya, " the Living Treasure ", in the Zghorta district of North Lebanon. The pine trees and oak trees cover the great hills surrounding it. Fruit trees of every description grow all along the valley which extends into the Valley of Qannubin to form the great Qadisha Valley, thus bearing witness to the history of eremitic life and the quest for holiness in Lebanon.

Stop At: Gibran Museum, Bsharri, Lebanon

According to his wishes, the body of poet and artist Khalil Gibran (1883–1931), author of the much-loved The Prophet (1923), was interred in the chapel of this 19th-century monastery built into the rocky slopes of a hill on the eastern outskirts of the town. Now a museum, the monastery building houses a large collection of Gibran’s paintings: dreamlike, symbolist nudes in the main. If you haven't read The Prophet, consider prioritising other attractions, as much of the art's context will be lost.

Stop At: The Cedars of God, Bcharre Lebanon

One of Lebanon’s most attractive ski resorts, the Cedars is also its oldest and most European in feel. The village takes its name from one of the country’s few remaining groves of cedar trees, which stands on the right-hand side of the road as you head up towards the ski lifts. A few of these slow-growing trees are thought to be approaching 1500 years old and fall under the protection of the Patriarch of Lebanon, who holds a festival here each August.
