Fish markets are one of the main attractions in Negombo. There are two new and old, without visiting them, familiarity with the city will be incomplete. The fish market attracts marine enthusiasts and interested foreigners alike due to the diversity of marine life seen here from lagoon dwelling crabs to deep ocean sharks such as tiger sharks or the occasional rare by-catch, the smells, sights which include long knives, severed fish and kind fisher folk and the sounds unique to a fish market.

Stop At: St. Mary's Church, Main Street, Negombo 22100 Sri Lanka

St. Mary's is Negombo's best known church and is one of the biggest attractions on the island. It is about 140 years old and has got amazing religious depictions painted all across its ceiling. The main church itself is very grand. There are religious statuettes all across the upper walls outside the aisle, and the highlight of course are the ceiling paintings. St. Mary's Church is a beautiful place to visit if you're in Negombo. The stained glass and the paintings spanning the church's entire ceiling are awesome to witness, especially considering that the church goes back almost a century and a half.

Stop At: Dutch Canal, Custom House Road, Negombo 22100 Sri Lanka

The Dutch Canal, also known as the Hamilton Canal, is a fascinating waterway which functioned as a supply route to the Dutch administration during the time of colonization. Today, the renovated Canal features a suspension bridge for pedestrians designed like a castle tower and boats to hitch rides on. With its colored ribbons of light, it is especially picturesque at night.

Stop At: Angurukaramulla Temple, Temple road, Negombo 22100 Sri Lanka

The Angurukaramulla Temple is a place of Buddhist and Hindu worship which is a short way inland from the city of Negombo. It is mostly noted for its Buddha Statue which is over 6 m in height and visible from afar. At the base of the statue is a large dragon head with an open mouth through which the Buduge (Shrine room) is accessible. The outer hallway contains artwork on its walls and ceiling with statues of the Buddha along with other notable characters from Buddhist Literature. Within the inner chamber is the statue of the Sleeping Buddha where devotees can come to place an offering of flowers and spend time in worship.

Stop At: Dutch Fort, Esplanade Road, Negombo 22100 Sri Lanka

The Portuguese are the first to capture Negombo which had the next strategic importance after the cities like Colombo, Jaffna and Galle. They built the fort to defend Colombo which was later captured by the Dutch. In 1796 the fort came under the control of British without opposition. Later in 1800, the British decided to demolish the building and build a prison in its place.
