However, there is evidence to suggest that the caves in the rock were used as a Buddhist monastery that were occupied by monks during the 3rd century BCE. During 477 and 495 CE, the reign of King Kashyapa, Sigiriya was built into a majestic fortress. Following the demise of King Kashyapa, the fortress became a monastery again and remained so until the 14th century, after which it was abandoned. Sigiriya is considered to be an engineering marvel due to the sheer advanced skills that was required to construct the fortress out of a massive rock that is about 200 meters high. King Kashyapa chose this rock to build his fortress and stay safe due to the height of the rock, which was an advantage as it gave a 360-degree view, thus making it a strong defensive point.
