Leaving busy Lake Como behind, we wind our way into the Val Sanagra nature reserve – lying just above Menaggio, it is one of the lake’s best-kept secrets. Step back in time as we pass evocative stone houses and old water mills dotted along the banks of a gentle mountain stream. We take a slow cycle further into the mountains, passing historic villages and grassy green fields, and generally enjoying the peace and quiet before the fun begins! A glorious, shady downhill with stunning views guides us onto the shores of Lake Lugano. Pass By: Grandola ed Uniti

We start our tour from the agricultural hamlet of Cardano in Grandola ed Uniti, where the old railway used to pass between Lake Como and Lake Lugano. The hamlet dates back to the Renaissance and we will take a ride along the old cobbled alleyways past the Bagatti Valsecchi villa that stills belongs to this noble Milanese family; we will see the bar that was the old railway station before meeting up with the cycle path that leads down to Menaggio, Lake Como.

Pass By:

We leave the cycle path and make our way into the small hamlet of Loveno with it's characteristic streets and lovely views across Lake Como from the Villa Vigoni which we will ride past before heading into the Val Sanagra.

Pass By: Museo Etnografico E Naturalistico Val Sanagra

We enter the Val Sanagra nature reserve to discover the valley stream that gave life to a number of mills along the waterway. Today just one of the original mills remains and we will walk past it as we admire the simple, rustic charm of this hidden community which is also home to gorgeous stone houses and ancient stone bridges.

Pass By:

As we head head further into the mountains in the direction of Lake Lugano, we take a short detour into the village of Velzo. Surrounded by grape vines, and immersed in mountain scenery, the quiet, cobbled streets are a joy to cycle.

Stop At: Naggio

We enter Naggio, another typical mountain village before preparing for a gorgeous downhill ride through the forest to get our first glimpse of Lake Lugano.

Pass By: Carlazzo

We ride the back roads of Carlazzo for some lovely lake views before riding down to the town of Porlezza.

Stop At: Lungolago Porlezza

We ride through the historic centre of this lakeside town before taking a slow cycle along the lakefront to enjoy the view across Lake Lugano. We will stop right on the beach in the area of Port Letizia and have a coffee or ice-cream in the area, taking in the beauty of this location. Our homeward journey take us past the natural reserve of Lake Piano where the mountains are reflected in the still waters. We follow the old railway line passing expansive green fields until we reach Cardano where our tour ends.
