Day 1 Nevada High Desert, Wheeler Peak, and Stargazing in International Dark Sky Park

Stop At: Wheeler Peak

Superb hiking opportunities exist in Great Basin, including climbing the 13,000 ft. Wheeler Peak. From here, you stand on the second highest peak in Nevada gazing from the Alpine to Sub Alpine to Forrest to High Desert to Desert in every direction. It’s a unique and dramatic change of climates that is rarely seen elsewhere.

Duration: 3 hour

Stop At: Great Basin National Park

One of the big draws of the park is going through so many ecosystems in such a short time. We will be standing on alpine, looking across sub alpine, forrest, high desert, and desert, each of which we will be able to explore.

Duration: 2 hour

Stop At: Great Basin National Park

Great Basin is the #1 National Park for stargazing based on lack of light pollution and is a certified International Dark Sky Park. We will work to schedule trips based on ideal Milky Way positioning, lack of moon, atmosphere clarity, and cloud cover. It should be noted that the conditions for stargazing can simply never be guaranteed.

Duration: 2 hour

Day 2 Bristlecone Pines, Grey Cliffs, Pyramid Peak Loop

Stop At: Bristlecone Trails

The other big payoff of Great Basin is seeing the Bristlecone Pine, known as the oldest living organisms on earth. A tree in Great Basin known as Prometheus was shown to be 4,900 years old until it died, shifting the record to another Bristlecone Pine in the White Mountains of California. Since that time, more samples have been shown to be over 5000 years old. Great Basin has one of the largest collections, encompassing three groves across the park. None of the groves are particularly easy to access and involve significant hiking.

Duration: 3 hour

Stop At: Great Basin National Park

The southern portion of the park features the Grey Cliffs and winds below Wheeler peak. Groups will have an option of hikes of numerous lengths/difficulties in the Pyramid Peak area.

Duration: 4 hour

Stop At: Great Basin National Park

As we take in the last of the sunset from the mountains, we will check live cloud cover and attempt to take a route back to Las Vegas that allows for stargazing and astrophotography if the opportunity had not been presented up to this point. Again, this cannot be fully guaranteed.
