The town was founded by colonists from Rhodes and Crete coming from nearby Gela and reached its maximum splendor in the V c. BC when the magnificent Doric temples were built on the southern hill. In 406 the town was conquered by the Carthaginians though with the last Punic War it passed into Roman hands, who took over and changed its name to Agrigentum.

Pass By: Sicily

After pick up by your LOCAL GUIDE at your hotel in Palermo, you'll be driven on board of a Premium Mercedes Minivan through the wonderful interior of the landscape south of the capital. The Sicani Mountains and the hilly landscape is already a highlight of this tour. After approx. 2.5 hours you'll reach Agrigento.

Stop At: Valle dei Templi

Visit the Valley of Temples during a private guided walk through the archeological area with your local guide. Begin from the Temple of Juno - enjoy an excellent view of the entire valley; then admire the Temple of Concordia which is beautifully preserved. Finally the oldest ruin which is traditionally named the Temple of Hercules. These are among the greatest Greek ruins in the Sicily, and the splendor of the temples in the Doric style, built during the fifth and sixth centuries BC. - Drive back to Palermo after a lunch break.
