This is the best-kept secret on Big Island. Hardly anyone knows about these two tide pools. The scenery is reminiscent of Big Sur: stunning views, steep cliffs, vibrant vegetation - something straight out of a movie. You are totally immersed in nature. You will be blown away before we even begin the hike. We'll meet on Papio St. in front of Kahakai Park (park on the side of the road) before driving 2 miles to the trailhead. After hiking along a lush jungle trail for 10 minutes, we'll arrive at the first tide pool. We'll then hike along a coastal trail for 30 minutes. Sometimes you're 75 feet above the water. The views are amazing! The second pool is more private. The splashing waves get as high as 50 feet! I know all the best spots, allowing you to get as close as possible to the wild ocean. There are tons of interesting organisms to explore. Sea turtles are a common sight in the ocean. The terrain is a playground! After, I'll take you to a fruit farm stand (cash only).

Stop At:

The trailhead is located about half a mile from Pakaka Road. There are no signs, so I will lead you to the trailhead via car after we meet on Papio Street in front of Kahakai Park. The surrounding jungle is so stunning that the drive and trailhead is an attraction in and of itself.

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At:

I recommend hiking shoes/sandals and waterproof shoes ("water shoes" are ideal). If you can hike in your waterproof shoes, even better. Many guests bring snorkeling gear. There will be some minor climbing on the coastal trail. The difficulty is moderate. As long as you go slow during certain sections, you will succeed. The depth of the tide pools is variable. Peak depth is never less than 3 feet. The tide pools contain the purest water you have ever swam in. Small fish dart around the crystal clear water. I've never seen anyone else at the second tide pool. It's your own private pool in the middle of the jungle. To avoid injury, stay away from slippery rocks and splashing waves.

Duration: 1 hour 40 minutes

Stop At:

After the hike is over, I will take you to a fruit farm stand (cash only).
