The Miraflores Locks are the tallest on the entire canal, and it’s thrilling to watch ships make the slow step-up or step-down as they travel between sea level on the Pacific Ocean and Gatun Lake, whose surface is 85 feet (26 meters) above sea level. This is also the perfect place to see parts of the canal expansion that was completed in June, 2016. The recent project adding a new lane of boat traffic that doubles the Panama Canal’s capacity to accommodate ‘New Panamax’ ships that carry staggering cargoes between the two oceans.
