Royal Palace Rabat Morocco

15 minutes

The Royal Palace, formerly known as the Imperial Palace or "dar el-makhzen," in Rabat, the capital of Morocco, stands as the primary royal residence in the country, serving as the official dwelling for the Moroccan royal family. Initially constructed as the palace for Alawite sultans, it now represents one of several palaces or royal residences within the "imperial cities," such as the Skhirat Palace, which gained notoriety during an attempted coup d'état in the era of King Hassan II. Presently, the Royal Palace of Rabat functions primarily as an administrative building, as King Mohammed VI, the son of Hassan II, does not inhabit the premises . It is within this palace that the seat of government is situated.

Great guide!

Asan is a wonderful tour guide who treats you like family. He is very knowledgeable about the city and ensures you see all the places that drive the local culture. He also doesn’t make you go to over priced, underwhelming locations, only the best and most welcoming stops. I would highly recommend his company.
Great day out seeing the sights in Rabat - a very picturesque city

best to understand that this is not a guided tour you basically have use of a private car with driver for a day to travel to Rabat from Casablanca (c1 hour each way) and visit the key sites - I'm sure the stops can be tweaked on the day - - we started with the royal palace - just a quick look at the outside - you can't visit inside anyway - then on to Chella ruins - really fascinating site even if the ticket booth is rather too keen to sell you an audioguide - we took it but didn't find it of much value - the resident stark population was a real surprise and delight (not in Aug-Sept though as they are elsewhere), This was followed by Hassan Tower and Mohammed V Mausoleum - on one large site and then finally we went to the Oudaya Kazbah & corniche - NB the Andalusian Gardens are in the Oudaya Kasbah but are closed on Tuesdays (we were on a cruise port stop so knew in advance we wouldn't be able to go in the gardens). A great day out - the car was comfortable, well stocked with water and driven well by Laila. As I said there is no guiding at the sites - this may vary by driver and their language skills whilst you're in transit - so better suits an independent tourist - it is also extremely well priced and felt it was great value for money - although the agenda suggests specific timings you essentially take the time you need we were never under pressure to limit visits to a specific time slot - Chellah was where we spent most of our time. Would strongly recommend.

Anas picked us up right on time at the cruise port. Nice Mercedes van with comfortable leather seats and lots of bottled water provided. He was very friendly and treated us like family and insisted we consider him as family as well. We had a day trip booked to Riyat. He scheduled a comfort stop at the very pleasant rest stop along the highway with clean facilities which was very considerate. Also introduced us to Moroccan mint tea which was nice. In Riyat he was flexible with what we wanted to see. He knew good shop recommendations for authentic carpets. Argan oil & spices and pottery & ceramics. Also a very pleasant seaside lunch. He was a terrific ambassador for Morroco.
