Meeting Point

Bo-kaap

30 minutes

Situated at the foot of Signal Hill, on the fringe of the City Centre, Bo-Kaap’s -formerly known as the Malay Quarter-, dates back to the 1760's, when numerous rental houses “huurhuisjes”; were built and leased to slaves brought from Malaysia, Indonesia and the rest of Africa to work in the Cape. It is a mix of Cape Dutch and Georgian Architecture. Houses were later repainted with bright colours by their owners as an expression of their freedom! Take a walk and discover these awe-inspiring colourful houses, explore the Cape Malays culture and cuisine or visit some of the art galleries to take a look at locally produced crafts.
