A chance to hold a real katana
2025-04-27
I didn't really know what to expect for this one, I only signed up to join my husband but I had so much fun myself! They start by dressing everyone in the training gear and then going over a little history and explanation- including why some moves you see in movies or have a desire to try aren't a great idea. Then we jumped into some guided training with the practice katanas. Then we were tested out on the moves by ourselves before getting the opportunity to do some cuts with a real katana. It was a little stressful and scary but a great time and we even got little membership cards that are such a cute touch!

Taught by a real sensei, this class was really authentic, fun and very educational. I'm glad we booked this instead of a less expensive but less authentic option. The instructors are very passionate about the experience and were nice to deal with. Highly recommended.

The training takes place in an actual dojo with practitioners of iaido. We were fitted with training attire and issued a training katana (sword) and given safety instructions.
Yushin-sensei then taught us a basic kata (with the assistance of Jordan-san who helped bridge language barrier).
The instructors were very patient and supportive.
We were able to observe a few kata demonstrations by sensei displaying the agility and precision of this art. It left is in awe.
We were then given the opportunity to cut a tatami mat with a real 250 year old katana
There great emphasis on safety protocols and adhering to sensei’s instructions to ensure the safety of all participants.
We were given the opportunity to take photos and videos of us cutting the mat!
Highly recommended!
