I prefer private half day tours as it leaves time for me to further explore on my own. Our tour guide Kadyrbek was superb. Firstly, Kadyrbek went to high school in Colorado, and thus speaks fluent, unaccented English. There is no confusion on what he is explaining, and he has a deep knowledge of all the important sites in Astana, as well as the history of Kazakhstan. He gave us as much or as little time as we wanted at each site and we never felt rushed. He was enthused and conveyed a love of his city and sharing it with visitors. Kadyrbek also suggested local restaurants and local dishes we should consider trying. As many of these dishes centered around horse meat and horse milk, they are unique to Kazakhstan. I would unconditionally recommend booking a tour with Kadyrbek; it was one of most in-depth, professionally conducted tours I have had, and I take these types of tours several times a year. We are extremely happy we added Astana to our Central Asian itinerary. The city is definitely worth a visit.
