Haus der Musik

House of Music in central Vienna, a museum more off the beaten track, is dedicated to the ‘science’ of sound as well as classical music itself. With all its interactive displays a truly entertaining place for the whole family! Highlights include the historical archives of the Vienna Philharmonic where you can listen to their famous New Year’s Eve concert and the brandnew Sonotopia Universe on the 2nd floor. It´s here where you can create your own sound creature in a VR Lab but also test interactive stations on the physics of sound. If Beethoven, Mozart or the Strauss family are of interest, then head up to the 3rd floor to learn about their lives in the city and the music they created. Grand finale is the virtual conductor exhibit on the 4th floor - test your conducting skills by waving a baton along to a video of Vienna Philharmonic playing. You will even get feedback after having a go! You might want to enrich your visit by downloading the free museum guide on your smartphone.

As a classical music lover this visit was a must for me. I have learned a lot about music, the cience of sound and my favorite composers. The section on Beethoven, Schubert and Mahler were really inspiring for me and even I already knew a lot before the visit, I still learned many new details about their life and their life in Vienna

We choose this specifically because of the interactivity and fun-looking installations/exhibits and it did not disappoint. Neither of us are huge classical music fans, but the experience is a fantastic look through the history of great Viennense composers through to the the modern Philharmonic. The museum is go at your own pace, which is great because some exhibits/interactions can take some time and a line may form, but there is always something nearby you can engage with to pass time until your turn.
I think my favorite part is being able to "conduct" the Vienna Philharmonic with a baton and have them play to your tempo - whether correct or not. Conducting the CanCan a bit too fast defintely made me feel like Bugs Bunny.
