Meeting Point
Prague Castle
The centuries old, picturesque streets of Prague have a magical, cinematic quality. It is easy to imagine the opening scene as the camera lens twists in and out of the shadows and sunbeams in the narrow alleyways, panning down the length of Wencelas Square or running alongside the banks of the swiftly flowing Moldau River as it meanders around the medieval Old Town. Let you and your family take a starring role as you discover the unique story of this beautiful city; make its historical centre your playground for this enlightening 2.5 hour kids tour. As we wind our way from the Castle down to the heart of Prague, we’ll explore the city in a different light, using games and activities to help its history come alive for the young and young at heart. Starting in the extensive grounds of Prague Castle, the world’s largest castle complex, we cross the stone courtyards and explore its nooks and crannies. Depending upon which day it is we may our way to the Plecnik Staircase, a “whispering staircase” with pitch-perfect acoustics. Alternatively we may wander to Golden Lane, a Romanesque street steeped in stories of science and myth where according to legend alchemists sought to turn metal into gold. The vastness of the complex would take hours to cover but we shall ensure that we have the time to marvel at the decorative detail and wonderfully coloured mosaics that adorn the exterior of the monumental St. Vitus’ Cathedral. Upon exiting the castle grounds you will have a bird’s eye view of the Old Town, clustered on the river bank opposite. Armed with your burgeoning knowledge of old-world Prague – and maybe even with sketchbooks and pencils – we shall stroll together down the hill, through the Lesser Town, noting the many varieties of cobblestone patterns and seeing the distinctive house signs that hang above the doorways. As we go your guide will tell you about the unique history of this quaint, downhill section of Prague. We emerge all of a sudden from the side streets and arrive at Charles Bridge to be confronted by the statues with their expressive, yet inscrutable faces, that line this famous crossing. Our walk ends just of Wencelas Square – a pivotal point of the historical centre and the ideal place from which to further explore Prague.
