What You Will Do

This is an intimate tour of one of Rome's most famous landmarks: The Ghetto. The traditional home of Rome's Jewish community, (Europe's oldest) the Ghetto was walled-in for nearly 300 years. It's still the center of Jewish life in Rome, full of history, sights and good food. The tour guides you through the winding streets of the Ghetto, explaining everything along the way. You'll see ancient structures like the famous Portico D'Ottavia, and where the Holocaust took place in Rome. You'll explore the massive Neo-Baroque synagogue and also pop into a family-run bakery for the best kosher cookies in the world. This tour has something for everyone and with Voicemap's GPS-triggered audio, you can spend a quiet morning wandering around the neighborhood and know the answers to every question you might have. The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

Fontana di Piazza delle Cinque Scole

Scola means synagogue, and so Piazza delle Cinque Scole contained the Temple, New, Castilian, Catalan and Sicilian "Scole". After the emancipation of the Ghetto, the complex was torn down, but the name has remained, the Piazza delle Cinque Scole.

This was my first experience with a self-guided audio tour, and I am hooked! The narrator gave a terrific and powerful walk through the history of the ghetto, and I felt immersed the entire time.
I would recommend this particular guide to anyone who wants to explore this corner of Rome.
