What You Will Do

The Archeological Site represents the evidence of the Tolteca Empire's presence in the Querétaro area, an empire that influenced the whole Meso-American region for hundreds of years before the arrival of the Aztecs. You'll be able to understand the importance of the Tolteca trade and cultural presence in the area, why and how we know about them, the work of the archeologist in the site, the presence and importance of the pyramid and the hacienda that owned it during the colonial times, and what happened to them during the 19 and 20th centuries. It is a unique opportunity to learn about the pre-Hispanic history and culture before one of the largest pyramids in Mexico, and is just 50 minutes to 1 hour driving from San Miguel de Allende, in one of the suburbs of the Queretaro metro area.

Meeting Point

The meeting point is at "El Cerrito" archeological site's main entrance on Miguel Hidalgo Street, only 30 steps away from an Oxxo shop (Miguel Hidalgo Street and Don Bsoco Av.) in the Queretaro's suburb of "El Pueblito", just 50min. to 1 hour driving from San Miguel de Allende.

El Cerrito Archaeological Zone

Hundreds of years before the Aztec's domain in central Mexico, another, even wider empire was the centre of the Meso-American power and culture. The city of Chichén-Itzá in Yucatán marked its southern influential border while, "El Cerrito" in Querétaro marked its border to the north. In this experience you'll know the archeological site, the local museum, understanding the temporal and geographical importance of this monument, the nation that built it, and the enormus influence of the Toltecas in the Aztec culture.
