What You Will Do

The Atomic Museum is one of a handful of private national museums and showcases some of the rarest of artifacts relating to the nation’s atomic testing program. Nowhere else can you see a large nuclear reactor that was used in the development of the nuclear rocket and the first air-to-air missile, Genie. Personal atomic weapons that were developed to use in place of conventional weapons such as the Backpack Nuke and the Davy Crockett Weapon System (recoilless gun) are placed throughout the 8,000 square feet of museum exhibits.

The Atomic Museum

The mission of the Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation is to preserve and foster public accessibility to the history associated with the Nevada Test Site and the nation’s nuclear weapons program. The NTS Historical Foundation promotes and supports cultural, educational, and scientific programming to encourage the development and public exchange of views regarding the Nevada Test Site and its impact on the nation. The major program of the Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation is the National Atomic Testing Museum. Designated as a private National Museum in December 2012, the National Atomic Testing Museum is charged by Congress to preserve the history of and educate the public about the nation’s nuclear testing program. The Museum also upholds the mission of the Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation.

Overall, very good. But....

Overall, this museum is comprehensive and well-presented. We hadn't planned to be with the guide, but it worked out that his narration was audible all the way through.

The consensus of our party of 7 was that of a museum who done.

However, there is one failing: The video. The moralizing and justifying of the entire nuclear program is quite one-sided, hanging on the fear that we would now be in a dictatorship if it wasn't for the cold war nuclear program. That is perhaps possible, although recent events show a domestic threat is more likely.

It is good to make the argument that this program provided deterrence against those who threatened us with destruction especially the USSR. What went unaddressed was the actual costs of this program; robust estimates of early deaths from cancers and other diseases from both downwind effects of nuclear testing and nuclear workers' exposures. Our father was one of these fallen workers.

Give people a balanced view to ponder.

Wonderful displays and having a docent go through the Oppenheimer display was "icing on the cake." Highly recommend spending more time in the Nevada Test Site display. Great for young people midschool age and up.
Amazing if you love history and/or science

Fun stop for a change of pace off the strip. This museum is part of UNLV and very efficiently and well run. I soaked in the history and science behind the testing site in the 40’s and it was a lot to read, some great videos and even experiencing an atomic bomb. 1-2 hours is about right. When I went there were a couple of side experiences like a mini spy museum. I will take more of my family on my next visit
