Whitney Museum of American Art

2 hours

As the preeminent institution devoted to the art of the United States, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents the full range of 20th century and contemporary American art, with a special focus on works by living artists. The Whitney is dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting American art, and its collection—the finest holding of twentieth-century American art in the world—is it’s key resource. The Museum's signature exhibition, the Biennial, is the country's leading survey of the most recent developments in American art. Designed by architect Renzo Piano and situated between the High Line and the Hudson River, the Whitney's new building vastly increases the Museum’s exhibition and programming space, providing the most expansive view ever of its unsurpassed collection of modern and contemporary American art. Enjoy iconic works by Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollack, and Georgia O'Keeffe in natural light filled galleries and sweeping views of Manhattan on the Museum’s outdoor observation decks. The Whitney welcomes you to the Meatpacking District, a 20 square-block neighborhood with a bustling community of artists, galleries, restaurants, and nightlife. The Museum is steps from the High Line, Chelsea Market, and a short walk from Greenwich Village, where the Museum was founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1930.

Amy Sherald ‘American Sublime’ exhibit a must see!
(tripadvisor)
2025-05-03
Amy Sherald’s “American Sublime” paintings are at the Whitney Museum. This artist takes a photograph first and then paints a picture. Some of her paintings are her interpretation of famous paintings from artists like Edward Hopper or photographs like the famous kiss in Times Square on V-J Day, 1945 by Alfred Eisenstaedt. Here Amy has recreated it with two men kissing. It’s both provocative and visually beautiful. Friday evenings from 5 pm to 10 pm and the second Sunday of the month are free to visit the museum. Reservations have to be made online. I made one for yesterday, Friday for 5:15 pm. As I was there early, I was told that I could wait in a room near the cafe. The noise of a whoosh sound was very loud and two large inflated moving red hands kept me occupied. I pitied the security guard who showed me his ear buds and said he went out to take a noise break. Then at 5 pm,I was able to go up to see the exhibit. I enjoyed all the paintings including the one of Breonna Taylor. This exhibit is on till August 10th.
Good but some disappointing galleries

The Whitney Museum is an amazing building and they offer free entry on Friday evenings. Some of the work is not great and the line up to get a coffee in the bar is really really slow. Views from the balconies are great. Worth a visit.

Wonderful Amy Sherald exhibition. And make sure to look out of all windows for stunning views of the city and waterfront.
