Our Terrible One Day Tour To Vancouver
(tripadvisor)
2023-10-18
From Seattle to Vancouver is about 150 miles and takes a little over 2 1/2 hours to drive there. That's important. My wife and I left the Westin Hotel at 7 AM to walk to the city library to meet our tour guide. That is quite a walk. We have taken several tours and normally have been picked up where we are staying. That's the first negative. Our tour van arrived about 8:15 AM (A black and grey Ford Transit with no logos and it was dirty outside and inside). That was a second negative. We were told in the information we received prior to our trip that the tour guide would be dressed in a yellow uniform with a Universal Vision Logo on it. Our tour guide, Jackie, was not dressed as advertised. That's the third but only a minor negative. The next one, negative four is a pretty major one. All of the other travelers were Chinese. We have nothing against Chinese people being on our tour, but it did create probably the biggest negative of the tour. All the way to Vancouver and back to Seattle was dominated by Chinese conversation between our guide Jackie and the other passengers. All the way to Vancouver Jackie was playing videos on one of his phones with the sound coming thru the van speakers and the phone propped up on the dashboard for us to watch. Where I was sitting I couldn't see the phone at all but my wife could. He did play one video in English, but the vast majority was in Chinese. And he rarely spoke to us in English. It was like we hardly existed on the tour. Negative five was that we drove all the way to Vancouver to the steam clock without a stop. From 7 AM + 2 1/2 hours to Vancouver starting at about 8:30 AM + over a 1/2 hour to get cleared at the border = 4 1/2 hours total. We're in our seventies and a bathroom break would have been nice. I suppose we could have asked for one, but it just seems logical that an experienced tour guide would have provided a break. Another big negative six was that almost all the way to Vancouver and back to Seattle Jackie kept looking down at his phones as he was driving causing him to wander in and out of his lane. I truly didn't feel safe with his terrible driving. Negative seven was that he really didn't provide much information about any of the stops we made. Maybe in Chinese but we have no way of knowing that. Additionally, the stops were really not that interesting since Jackie provided no context for any of them. A very terrible tour experience. Jackie did drop us at the Westin when we returned to Seattle which might have been the highlight of our tour. We spent $291.20 for the tour thru Tripadvisor for without a doubt the most terrible tour we have ever been on.
